The Johnson County Community College Model
United Nations team won an Outstanding Delegation award for its portrayal of
Spain and Portugal Nov. 18-21 at the 2006 American Model United Nations Chicago,
IL.
Sixteen JCCC students competed against other university and college students
from across North and South America. Representing Spain were Brandon Bezner,
vice president, Overland Park; Nicholas Decamp, Merriam; Morgan Honnold, Kansas
City, Mo.; Barry Hersh, Lenexa; Robert Peckham, Lenexa; Jon Roby, Overland Park;
Christine Traner, vice president, Lawrence; Thomas Waldorf, Overland Park; and
Rachel Young, president, Leawood. Representing Portugal were Calvin Baumgarten,
Olathe; Estefania Bruzzone, Lenexa; Christina Hentzen, Kansas City, Mo.; J.D.
Rowe, Overland Park; David Smith, Lawrence; Katie Taloney, Overland Park; and
Kaori Wakabayashi, Eudora.
Team won an Outstanding Delegation Award for its portrayal of Kenya at the November 18-22, 2005 at the American Model United Nations International conference. The team’s success was led by Brandon Bezner who exceptionally represented Kenya in the General Assembly. In addition to Brandon, the JCCC team included Calvin Baumgarten, Jessica Bergman, Katie Brantingham, Andres Noory, Robert Peckham (team captain), Paige Houghton, Cortney Fowler, Kevin Broome, Rachel Young, Desiree Schumacher, Mick Larson, Emily Boullear, Christine Traner, Ben Freeman, Ryan Ngelale and Dr. Brian Wright (team advisor).
At the 2002 AMUN the JCCC team represented Ethiopia and Thailand.
At the 2001 AMUN the JCCC team represented Belgium and Uganda. The team continued its winning tradition at AMUN as each team won a "Best Delegation" award. Christina Drennon and Matt Zeiner won the award for their portrayal of Belgium on the Historic Security Council and Russ Merchant and Gloria Mugarura won the award for their work representing Uganda on the 2nd Committee.
In 2000, the JCCC UN Team represented Iraq and Jordan and won a total of five awards. Four of the awards were "Best Delegation" awards. These awards went to: Christina Drennon and Alec Jackson for their outstanding portrayal of Iraq as a "Party to the Dispute" in the Historic Security Council, Alec Jackson and Sohel Khan for their portrayal of Iraq in the First Committee, Christina Drennon and Robert Goc for their portrayal of Iraq in the Fourth Committee, and to Joshua Lusk and Richard Seagraves for their portrayal of Jordan in the Sixth Committee. The fifth award was the "Overall Best Delegation" award for our portrayal of Iraq throughout the entire conference.
In 1999, the JCCC UN Team represented the Russian Federation and for the second straight year was selected for a "Best Delegation" award for the work of Christina Drennon and Ryan Anderson on the Historic Security Council.
The JCCC UN Team first competed at AMUN in 1997 when they represented Afghanistan. In 1998 the team represented both Afghanistan and Israel and became the first community college to win the AMUN "Best Delegation" award for the work of Richard Seagraves on the Human Rights Commission.
