METRO KANSAS CITY MODEL UNITED NATIONS

Wednesday April 21, 2010

Johnson County Community College

Dear Teacher,

The Metro Kansas City Model United Nations (MKCMUN) is a complex simulation which can provide a rewarding educational experience for participants. By simulating the structure and operations of the United Nations, MKCMUN gives its participants the opportunity to experience the international milieu that the diplomats experience themselves. For the ninth straight year, Johnson County Community College United Nations Team will offer this unique educational opportunity to metro area high school students.

Metropolitan Kansas City Model United Nations (MKCMUN) will be a one day event held Wednesday April 21, 2010 from 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. on the JCCC campus.

If you have any questions, please contact me at (913) 469-8500 ext. 4266.  Together we can make MKCMUN an outstanding educational experience your students will long remember.

Sincerely,

Dr. Brian G. Wright

Delegation size will be from 4 to 5 students (per delegation or country). A list of countries available is attached.

MKCMUN Web Site

MKCMUN has web pages that are part of the JCCC UN Club’s Web site at mkcmun.htm

MKCMUN Rules

We have made every effort to simplify the complicated rules used at Model United Nations.  These rules are spelled out in the Procedural Primer page of the MCKMUN website (Rules).

Resolutions, and Position Papers (see)
Position papers are now an element of judging in selecting the overall team awards. In order for a team to be considered for an overall award the team must have submitted a complete position paper package (one per each committee on which that country is seated), the papers must be in the prescribed format. Please email position papers to bwright1@jccc.edu

Resolutions represent the formal decisions of the UN bodies; they may simply register an opinion, or recommend action to be taken by a UN organ or related agency. There will be no advanced submission of draft resolutions. Resolutions will be developed by delegates in committee.
(Please see MCKMUN website for details mkcmun.htm)

Reservation Forms

A reservation form is below.  Countries will be assigned according to country preferences on a first come first served basis if received by January 29, 2010.  After that date, countries will be assigned by JCCC.  Because we want as many schools to participate all schools are asked to be reasonable on their request.  A $50 non-refundable deposit per school (not per delegation) must accompany the reservation form.  The remainder of the fees for schools bringing multiple delegations will be collected the day of the simulation.  Make the check payable to Johnson County Community College (MKCMUN).

Organs to be Simulated

MKCMUN will run Security Councils plus General Assembly session, a General Assembly First Committee, and two or three additional committees to be announced.

 SECURITY Council

Topic - Open agenda
There will be a Security Council.  Since the Security Council was built to handle emergency situations, the Security Council may pick other topics as the need arises.

TOPIC BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Topic background information is available on the MKCMUN website by clicking on the appropriate topic.
