Resolutions are the Vehicle for Translating Country Positions into Effective Action

Steps in the resolution process

• Prepare initial draft resolution

  • based on position paper

  • should be

    • clear

    • concise

    • specific

    • meaningful action

      • do not merely recommend

        • further study

        • institution of a new body
          

• Obtain support of other country delegations

  • caucusing

    • defending your position

    • answering questions

  • revising and compromising to obtain support

    • building consensus

  • obtaining required number of sponsoring signatures
    

• Bring resolution to the floor

  • debate the issue on the floor

  • goal is 

    • building consensus

      • must be willing to compromise

    • finding effective solution to the problem
